One Book One School - PCES
Chapter Nine and Ten Parent Discussions
Wilbur tries to make a web. He even boasts that he can do it, but after many attempts, he fails. How do you handle failure at something you have tried so hard to achieve?
Talk about persistence. What does it mean to never give up?
Charlotte tells Wilbur that she prefers to think alone (p. 64). Why do you think she prefers that? When you have a problem that needs solving, would you like to be alone or would you like to talk it over with someone?
Avery tries to capture Charlotte and the event that stops him is Wilbur’s trough tipping over which causes the explosion. Are you glad this happened? Have you ever tried to capture a spider? Do you have a story to tell about a time when you captured a spider? What did you do with it? Knowing what we know from Charlotte about all of the good spiders do for our planet, could you think differently about doing away with the spider as opposed to just leaving it alone or letting it outside?
From page 75:
It was a delicious meal: skim milk, wheat middlings, leftover pancakes, half a doughnut, the rind of a summer squash, two pieces of stale toast, a third of a gingersnap, a fish tail, one orange peel, several noodles from a noodle soup, the scum off of a cup of cocoa, an ancient jelly roll, a strip of paper from the lining of the garbage pail, and a spoonful of raspberry jello.
What was the purpose of providing such an in-depth description of Wilbur’s meal? How do passages like this one enhance the text for you?
What words would you write in your web?

1 Book 1 School - PCES is reading Charlotte's Web - Chapters 6-8
Chapter 6
E.B. White takes the time to give details about the different bird calls that Wilbur can hear. An idea for learning at home might be to research what sound birds from our area make. Check out this website from Cornell Lab of Ornithology for an extensive catalog of bird calls. https://www.birds.cornell.edu/home/all-about-birds/
Chickadee?
Blue Jay?
Eagle?
Which of these birds has the loudest call?
What do you think of Templeton and how he lives?
Chapter 7 is a good time to talk about “life on a farm”. Where does hamburger and steak come from? Where does a pork chop or bacon come from? What about chicken thighs? Milk?
In Chapter 8, Mr. Arable tells his wife,”Maybe our ears aren’t as sharp as Fern’s.” What do you think he means?

SPORTS PHYSICALS:
Free sports physicals will be offered on February 26th for all 5th-12th grade students who wish to play a sport. Students can pick one up at either office. Please have forms returned by 2/14 so our practitioner can plan her time accordingly. Any forms received after the 14th will be done on a space available basis and won't be guaranteed.

Good morning, due to the anticipation of heavy snow fall during the afternoon bus run, SAD #4 will have an early release today, February 6th. Schools will release at 11:30 am. There will be no afternoon Pre-K or after school activities.

We will be hosting a scholarship night at PCSS for all seniors and their parents. Our school scholarship booklet will be handed out that night and we will talk about the steps in the scholarship process as well as hear from some valuable outside resources. Dinner will be provided. See information in the flyer below!
