IMB-R Procedures for Objection to Curriculum Topic or Material
NEPN/NSBA Code: IMB-R

PROCEDURES FOR OBJECTION TO CURRICULUM TOPIC OR MATERIAL

Persons who object to M.S.A.D. #4’s selection of materials and who wish a particular item to be reviewed must follow the following procedure.

A. If a person has a question or objection to curriculum, topic(s), or materials, they should first address the concern with the classroom teacher.

B. If not satisfied with the results of this meeting, the persons must submit a parent’s objection to curriculum topic or material form to the building principal. Forms are available in the principal’s office.

C. The principal upon receipt of the form will notify the complainant to set up a meeting with the principal, classroom teacher and the complainant to address these concerns and document this in writing.

D. If unable to reach a mutually agreed upon compromise, the principal will refer the matter to the Superintendent. At this point, the parent/guardian may use the current Opt Out Procedure for their child.

E. The Superintendent will render a decision within 14 working days of the receipt of the complainant’s request.

F. If the complainant does not accept the Superintendent’s decision, the complainant has five working days from the receipt of the Superintendent’s decision to request a review by the M.S.A.D. #4 Board of Directors.

G. The Board of Directors at their next regularly scheduled meeting will remand the matter to the Curriculum Committee who will have 30 working days from the receipt of the written request in which to review and render a decision. The decision of the Board of Directors of M.S.A.D. #4 will be final.

During the investigation the materials will remain in normal use.

All decisions are to be forwarded to the complainant by certified return receipt mail.

Working days are defined as days when M.S.A.D. #4’s Central Office is open.
